Burgas has a humid subtropical climate with some continental influences. The warmest month in Burgas is July, with an average temperature of 22.7°C, and the sea is warmest in August, with an average temperature of 24.9°C.

Location

Burgas is located on the shores of the Burgas Bay and is surrounded by three lakes: Burgas, Atanasovsko, and Mandrensko. Burgas has two sand spits: Kumluka, located between Lake Burgas and the Black Sea, approximately 3 km long and about 1 km wide; and Atanasovska Spit, located between Lake Atanasovsko and the Black Sea, approximately 1 km long.

In the waters of the Bay of Burgas lies the island of St. Anastasia, which is composed of volcanic rock. Burgas is located to the south. Varna at a distance of 130 kilometers, and from Sofia at a distance of 360 km.

How to get there?

You can get to Burgas by plane; there's an airport with extensive air traffic. Burgas Airport is located near the Sarafovo district and 11 km from the city center.

Of course, you can get there by bus; there's a bus station. And buy the cheapest bus tickets You can do it here. And by train, there is a railway station.

Buses and trolleybuses operate within the city limits. A ticket within the city costs 75 cents. Buying online works out a bit cheaper. There are several official taxi companies in the city. Taxis can be ordered by phone.

The city offers car, bicycle, and electric scooter rentals. You can also take a ride on the city's steam train, which runs every 30 minutes.

If you're arriving by car, you should know that the city is divided into zones. The blue zone is for paid parking. Parking costs half a euro per hour. You can pay via SMS or a phone app. Failure to pay will result in your car being towed and a hefty fine.

Beaches of Burgas

Burgas's central beach stretches for two kilometers. It is located near the Sea Garden. The northern beach is almost 2 kilometers long.

You can see what it looked like today in the photo. There were a lot of kitesurfers on the beach here. The entry into the sea isn't too steep, but it's not too shallow either, so keep an eye on small children.

The sand on Burgas beaches has dark gray patches. The beach has many wooden walkways, making it easy to get closer to the sea. A sign in front of the beach also states that the beach is treated against ticks.

A promenade runs along the beaches, perfect for strolling or cycling. There are restaurants and bars on the beaches. It's not uncommon to find an ethnographic restaurant right on the seashore along the promenade.

There are several soccer and volleyball fields and a playground. The beaches have lifeguard posts, changing rooms, and showers. Pets are prohibited on the beach, and some beach areas also prohibit bringing your own food and drinks. This likely means you'll have to buy these on the beach itself. Although the beaches in Burgas are cleaned, we encountered seaweed on the shore.

The beach, like other Bulgarian resorts, is divided into paid and free areas. You can book a set (tent with mattresses) online for 4 euros. A parasol or sun lounger in the paid area costs 0.60 cents.

Burgas doesn't have as much choice of accommodation as Varna, but we managed to find something.

So, this summer, high-season accommodation prices start at €36 for an entire apartment. Beachfront apartments start at €72. Also, keep in mind that there are no hotels in Burgas that offer all-inclusive meals.

Food and what options are there?

Hotels in Burgas don't offer all-inclusive accommodation, so the main question for tourists is where to eat. There are four dining options in Burgas.

The first power supply option.

This is the simplest, but also the most expensive option. It involves eating at cafes or restaurants located throughout the city. A tip for tourists: choose establishments that are open year-round. They'll have lower prices and higher quality, because that's where the locals eat, and they won't overpay. This type of dining requires several test orders at different establishments, reading reviews, and, in short, spending time before you find the one that suits you. This option will also be more expensive than others.

Second option.

A budget-friendly option is to cook your own meals and buy groceries at chain stores like Billa, Lidl, Kaufland, and Metro. This option will keep your food costs close to what you'd spend at home.

In Burgas, we also saw an abundance of vegetable and fruit stalls located right on the city streets.

Third option.

It combines savings with the fact that you don't have to cook yourself. You can buy prepared food at stores that have a so-called "hot counter," like those found at Billa stores.

The fourth power supply option

This is an alternative and relatively new food option: home delivery of prepared meals. Burgas offers several well-known services where you can order food from a selection of restaurants directly to your home. This may not be the cheapest option, but it's very fast, convenient, and comfortable. Online grocery stores also operate in Bulgaria, offering home delivery.

What to see in Burgas?

Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius«

It is one of the symbols of Burgas. The church is located in the city center, on Saints Cyril and Methodius Square. It is named after the brothers, creators of the Slavic alphabet and preachers of Christianity among the Slavic peoples. A school of the same name is located opposite the church.

Pier or bridge.

The city's calling card. This is a place where tourists come to stroll along the pier and take photos. And at the very end of the pier, there's an observation deck.

From there, a panoramic view opens up to the east, west, and north. Information signs on the platform explain what can be seen. For a better view, a spotting scope is also installed; insert a coin to activate it.

Sea Garden

It offers beautiful views of the sea. There are plenty of spots for photoshoots and just admiring the sea.

Summer Theater

It is a center for cultural events in the summer. The park's green spaces are an open-air museum of sculptures, the result of plein-air painting sessions held in the city many years ago. The sea garden is filled with benches and bike paths.

Burgas Lighthouse

The Burgas Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in Bulgaria. It was commissioned by a French company.

Island of Light Anastasia

The earliest human presence on the island is attested in the 4th-6th centuries.

Aviation Museum

It's located on the grounds of Burgas Airport; turn right when entering the airport. The museum displays airplanes and helicopters from both civil and military aviation. Some exhibits have accessible cockpits where you can sit in the pilot's seat.
