Bulgaria's Grocery Basket 2020. Grocery prices in Bulgaria. Let's go shopping. Metro is represented by 2,200 shopping centers in 31 countries. It's worth noting that Metro stores in Bulgaria have recently introduced cardless access. Cards are simply not checked at the entrance, and you can pay at the checkout without presenting your card, making Metro stores in Bulgaria accessible to everyone.
In Bulgaria, it's easy to navigate the local currency; simply divide the price in leva by two to get the price in euros.
Bread prices
So, let's start compiling the 2020 Bulgarian grocery basket with the bread section. Here are 400-gram packages of bread in various varieties, from the fitness series: classic, rye, with added nuts, pumpkin seeds, and flax seeds... The price of this bread is 60 cents.
Toaster bread in a large 900-gram package: white or whole grain bread. Price: 1 euro.
Half a kilo of whole-grain "Trapezen" bread costs 68 cents. Another 600-gram wheat-rye loaf is 70 cents. And a 600-gram loaf of white bread costs 48 cents. It's even cheaper: half a kilo of white bread costs 43 eurocents.
Let's take a look at the bottom shelf. This is where you'll often find the lowest prices.
Indeed, we see rye bread next to whole-grain bread, each weighing 600 grams, at the lowest price—40 cents. Let's add this bread to our Bulgarian grocery basket, which we'll calculate at the end of the video. Incidentally, white bread is more popular in Bulgaria, while brown or dark bread isn't readily available. And, as a rule, it's more expensive than white bread.
A 1 kg bag of salt costs 16 cents. We also see that other types of salt are available: iodized, sea, pink, Himalayan, and in various packaging sizes, but these are more expensive per kg.
A 2-kilogram bag of white sugar costs 1 euro 93 cents. A 1-kilogram package of sugar costs 65 cents.
Coffee prices
A 100 gram jar of regular Jacobs coffee costs 3 euros 45 cents.
It's worth noting that tea isn't popular in Bulgaria, so the selection is limited and it's usually expensive. A 20-bag pack of Aro black tea costs 0.50 euro cents. A pack of Ahmad tea costs 2.55 euros.
Rice prices
Half a kilo of "Biser Extra" rice costs 1 euro and 11 cents. From this price tag, we see that if you buy 18 packs of rice, the price drops to 97 cents per pack, and if you buy 24 packs, the price drops to 92 cents. The difference isn't huge, but those who buy in large quantities can save significant amounts. In Bulgaria, only Metro stores currently offer discounts based on the number of packs purchased.
A kilogram of rice costs 1 euro 32 cents. Here we see another kilogram of rice priced at 1 euro 17 cents.
Buckwheat prices
A 400-gram package of buckwheat costs 1 euro 17 cents. A 1-kilogram package of buckwheat costs 1 euro 98 cents. In Bulgaria, buckwheat is called elda. Incidentally, it's not popular in Bulgaria and can only be found in a few stores, including Metro. Lentils, known as leshta in Bulgarian, are popular in Bulgaria. Half a kilo of them costs 1 euro 45 cents.
Pasta prices
Budget pasta costs 0.32 cents for a 400-gram bag. Aro brand pasta is the same price. Half a kilo of premium pasta costs 1 euro 16 cents. All other pasta is more expensive. It's worth noting that even the cheapest brands of pasta in Bulgaria are of acceptable quality.
The price of oil
One liter of this sunflower oil costs 1 euro 66 cents. The second option is cheaper—1 euro 28 cents. On this day, sunflower oil was the cheapest at Metro. Overall, the average price of a one-liter bottle of sunflower oil in Bulgaria, without discounts or specials, is 1 euro.
Flour type 500, price per kilogram package 70 cents.
A 160 gram can of tuna costs 63 cents,
And Czech pâté costs 25 cents. A 180-gram "Appetit" pâté costs 66 eurocents.
Prices for dumplings
A kilogram of pork dumplings costs 4 euros 56 cents, and if you buy three packages at once, then the price per kilogram will be 3 euros 96 cents.
The price for 1 kg of frozen chicken is 2 euros 29 cents, but with a discount it costs 1 euro 43 cents.
We approach the sausage rows.
Prices for sausages and cold cuts
A 200-gram package of turkey sausages costs 1 euro 17 cents. If you buy 5 packages, the price is 87 cents per package. Let me show you how products of the same name, but with different shelf lives, can be stored on the same shelf, using these sausages as an example.
This package has a best-before date of November 15, 2020, this one until November 5, this one until November 8, and this one only until October 29. So if you're stocking up on groceries, I recommend checking expiration dates. To be fair, I haven't encountered any expired products here. Products that are approaching their expiration dates but not yet expired are usually sold out in select locations with discounts of 20-30%.
Dry-cured sausages. A roll of Madzhar sausage costs 3 euros and 6 cents.
330 grams of sausage costs 2 euros 39 cents.
This 220 gram "Narodnaya" sausage costs 1 euro 63 cents, and if you buy 6 pieces at once, the price per sausage will be 1 euro 22 cents.
A 380-gram jar of Danone sour cream costs 1 euro 47 cents. A smaller jar costs 90 cents.
Milk prices
Vereya milk costs 94 cents per liter. There are cheaper milks, such as Aro with 3% fat content, which costs 82 cents, and milk with 1.5% fat content is even cheaper, at 71 cents.
Butter. Interestingly, the majority of butter sold in Bulgarian stores is German. Bulgarian-produced butter is more expensive, and the selection is limited. Here's a 250-gram package of 82% butter, made in Germany, packaged in Bulgaria for 1 euro 53 cents.
Parmesan cheese prices
Italian Parmesan cheese. Prices start at €13.78 per kilogram, in 200-gram, 300-gram, and other packages.
Ordinary cheeses cost from 5 euros 60 cents per kilogram.
A pack of this cheese costs 6 euros 79 cents per kilogram.
Egg prices
In Bulgaria, eggs are categorized by size: S, M, L, and XL. This 10-pack of chicken eggs, size M, costs €1.43. These eggs of the same size cost €1.22. Buying eggs in a 30-pack will reduce the price per egg. You can also buy eggs in cardboard boxes at Metro, which will be even cheaper.
Vegetable prices
Potatoes at 40 cents per kilogram.
In the vegetable rows we see onions, cucumbers, and bell peppers at a price of 1 euro 32 cents per kilogram.
Tomatoes produced in Türkiye cost 1 euro 22 cents per kilogram, and pink tomatoes produced in Bulgaria cost 1 euro 93 cents.
Lemons cost 1 euro 22 cents per kilo.
Bulgarian apples of the “Zlatna Voskhodshnana” variety cost 94 eurocents per kilogram.
Seafood prices
Frozen octopus costs €7.10 per kilogram. Silver carp costs €3.82 per package. Mackerel costs €3.00 per half-kilogram package. Hake costs €4 per package. Salmon costs €15.30 per package.
Ice cream and chocolate prices
Ice cream costs €5 per 4-liter package. A 400-gram package of Eskimo ice cream costs €1.63.
Swiss Lindt chocolate costs 1 euro 78 cents for a 100-gram bar and up. Milka chocolate (300 grams) costs 2 euros 40 cents. A package like this with five 100-gram Milka bars costs 80 euro cents per bar.
This is Bulgarian chocolate, although budget-class, but quite tasty at 45 cents per 100-gram bar. Roshen chocolate starts at 60 eurocents per bar.
Water prices. A 1.5-liter bottle of Aro mineral water costs 19 cents.
A liter of average-priced nectar juice costs 1 euro 14 cents.

Bulgaria's Food Basket 2020
So, as promised, we present to you the Bulgarian food basket for 2020. We haven't included items with significant price variations depending on the season. When selecting the products, we focused on affordable yet acceptable quality items.
Why did we choose Metro to create our grocery basket in Bulgaria? For several reasons.
Firstly, the prices here for most goods are optimal; if there is another store with a lower price, the difference will be small and most likely it will be a promotional price.
