Prices in Bulgaria in 2021. The basket of goods in Bulgaria

It's been a year since our review of food prices in Bulgaria. Prices have changed during this time. In our previous review, we generally tried to show prices with discounts. However, discounts can also be as high as 50%. Discounted prices don't reflect the true price picture. Therefore, today we will show prices as they are, without discounts. And at the end of the article, we will calculate the food basket for Bulgaria in 2021 and compare it with the food basket from last year, 2020. 

Let me remind you that to make it easier to calculate prices in Bulgaria, simply divide the price in leva by 2 to get the price in euros.

Prices for bakery products in Bulgaria.

In Bulgarian stores, there is often a section for fresh baked goods next to regular bread.

White bread is the cheapest at €0.51, and dark bread is also the cheapest at €0.56.

Prices for fruits and vegetables in Bulgaria

Potatoes €0.51 per kg. This is the price without discount.

But the price of washed potatoes with a discount of 0.45€ was captured on camera. 

Regular onion 0.51€ per 1 kg.

Garlic at a price of €4.08 per 1 kg.

Tomatoes for €1.53. Cucumbers for €1.27. Red bell peppers for €1.53 and green bell peppers for €1.02. There was a special offer on green peppers.

Hot peppers for €1.93. .

Bulgarian apples priced at 0.91-1.22 €. .

Turkish lemons for €1.53.

Grocery stores in Bulgaria have sections with healthy food, often called “Bio”.

Tea and coffee

There are teas for sale, but the selection is limited. Regular black, green, and herbal teas are available. 

Ahmad tea costs €2.24 (black) and €2.39 (green).

Pasta.

Economy class 0.56 € per 1 kg.

Average price range 1.10 € per 1 kg. .

Premium class 1.42 € per 1 kg. .

It should be noted that in Bulgaria, even economy-class pasta is of quite acceptable quality.

Cereals

Rice 1.73 € per 1 kg.

Lentils in a package €1.83 per 1 kg.

Beans 3.00 € per 1 kg. .

But we didn’t come across peas in Bulgarian stores.

White sugar 0.66 € per 1 kg. .

Iodized salt costs €0.30 per 1 kg, and sea salt is even cheaper. 

Plain flour 0.76 € per 1 kg.

Sunflower oil 1.68 € per 1 liter.

Olive oil, glass bottle 4.59 € 750 milliliters.

Dairy products

Economy class milk 3.50% fat content 1 liter 0.81 €. .

Butter produced in Bulgaria 0.34 € and Germany 0.49 €, 250 gram packages.

Sour cream 400 grams €1.37. But in Bulgaria, "Kiselo mlyako" is more common. This dairy product, a cross between kefir and sour cream, is very popular in Bulgaria.

Cheeses Emmental 3.0 € per 0.4 kg, Gouda 2.19 € per 0.15 kg, Mozzarella…

Ice cream on a stick in chocolate 56 grams 0.4 €. .

Drinking water one and a half liters 0.33 €.

Household goods for the home

Economy toilet paper €2.44 for 10 pcs. .

Economy class toothpaste €1.02 per 1 piece. .

Schauma shampoo, half a liter, €2.75

Nivea soap 100 grams 0.89 €.

Palmolive soap 90 grams 0.71 €.

Laundry detergent - gel for 60 washes 10.15 €. .

So, as promised, we present to you the Bulgarian food basket for 2021. When selecting products, we focused on inexpensive but acceptable quality items. Compared to the 2020 basket, which we also calculated in the fall, we see that the basket has become significantly more expensive. 

By almost 13 percent!
